The attacks on 9/11 altered America in many ways, from barricades and body frisks in airports to greater government scrutiny of people’s records and electronic surveillance of their communications. The watershed, officials told FRONTLINE in the 2007 documentary “Spying on the Home Front,” was the government’s shift to a strategy of pre-emption at home — not just prosecuting terrorists for breaking the law, but trying to find and stop them before they struck.
The documentary probed the ramifications of that strategy, explored how the National Security Agency’s domestic surveillance program worked at the time, and examined various viewpoints on whether the Bush administration violated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and infringed on constitutional protections.

In early colonial times, letter writers sent their correspondence to friends, merchants, and Native Americans via foot or horseback. Most of this correspondence, however, was between the colonists and family members back home in England. In 1633, the first official notice of postal service in the colonies appeared. At the heart of the “mailing industry” is the U.S. Postal Service, which has been active for over two centuries. An explosion of mail in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century drove post offices and large-volume mailers to work together to handle mail more efficiently.

A student-led contact with astronauts through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program was a great success that earned significant media attention. On Monday, December 11, 2023, students at Harbor Creek High School in Harborcreek, Pennsylvania, used amateur radio to talk with Astronaut Andreas Mogensen, KG5GCZ.
The students are part of the Advanced Technologies Group, KC3SGV, an after-school club at Harbor Creek. Fifteen of the students are licensed radio amateurs. Their faculty advisor, Assistant Principal Drew Mortensen, AC3DS, is a graduate of the Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology, a professional development program led by ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio (http://www.arrl.org/teachers-i....nstitute-on-wireless Mortensen utilized what he learned in the program and brought it back to the school. The ARISS contact is just one of the many successes the program has had.
ARRL Education and Learning Manager Steve Goodgame, K5ATA, was on hand for the contact, and he was impressed by the skills demonstrated by the students.
Goodgame recalled, "From antenna assembly and installation to the actual control operator function of the radio during the contact itself, students were at the helm. Every student who asked a question of Commander Mogensen was a licensed amateur radio operator. When I asked what they had planned next, the response was, 'Well, the logical step would be to build and get a CubeSat launched.' This is exactly the type of program we hope to help create as an outcome of the Teachers Institute," said Goodgame.
Local, regional, and national media took note of the students' success. Local television newscasts featured the event, and NBC Journalist Harry Smith and a crew from NBC's TODAY were at the event to tell the story about the young hams.
This type of exposure for amateur radio is key to growing the hobby, according to ARRL Public Relations and Outreach Manager Sierra Harrop, W5DX. "The passion of these teenage operators led to this success story. Who doesn't love the story of young minds doing extraordinary things in STEM through amateur radio?" she exclaimed. ARRL Director of Development Kevin Beal, K8EAL, mentioned that the media coverage demonstrates the impact that the donors who have funded the Teachers Institute have on the future of amateur radio. Beal said, "The reach goes far beyond the one-week training institute and ripples out farther than we can see."

A firestorm has been raging on many American college campuses over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and in some places, devolving into hate-filled rhetoric and arrests. FRONTLINE and Retro Report have been following the escalating turmoil since the war began — talking to people on all sides of the divide, investigating how universities have responded, how powerful interests joined the fray, and how the conflict over the conflict ultimately spiraled out of control.
The resulting documentary, “Crisis on Campus,” offers an incisive look at mounting tensions at some of the nation’s most elite institutions, including Columbia and Harvard universities, which have been the focus of intense debate. The documentary features revealing interviews with students and faculty at Harvard and Columbia, as well as other key players in Washington and beyond. It examines how university leaders, some of whom have faced congressional hearings, navigated the challenges of responding to heated rhetoric and division on their campuses and balancing free speech with the need to prevent harassment and discrimination.
As of June 2024, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, and Hamas is still holding Israeli hostages. “Crisis on Campus” provides a window into how the divisions over the war continue to run deep on college campuses across the U.S.

Elon Musk completed his acquisition of the social media company formerly called Twitter nearly a year ago. At a time of intense polarization in the U.S. and worldwide, the move placed the richest man in the world in charge of one of the world’s most important platforms for news and political debate — and also put Musk squarely at the center of an ongoing debate about the limits of free speech and the spread of lies online.
This two-hour documentary from the team behind “Amazon Empire” and “The Facebook Dilemma” pulls back the curtain on the influential social media platform’s inner workings both before and after Musk’s takeover. In extraordinary, in-depth interviews, former Twitter employees give remarkable first-person accounts of how controversial content moderation decisions were made in the pre-Musk era, including the banning of former President Donald Trump after Jan. 6, 2021.
Former Twitter employees also give first-person accounts of the changes Musk made inside Twitter after buying the company, shedding new light on questions about free speech, hate speech and safety that have intensified during his tenure at the helm of the platform. “Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover” probes the profound impact Musk’s decisions have had on politics, speech and culture.

From FRONTLINE (PBS)’s Local Journalism Initiative, the Charlotte, North Carolina, NPR station @WFAENews and @FirelightMediaNYC, “Fractured” examines how the country’s mental health crisis is playing out within the criminal justice system in North Carolina, a state where it’s been harder to access mental health care than in most others.
"We've found that these defendants may wait months in jail, sometimes more than a year, for the treatment they need to be deemed well enough to go to court," says “Fractured” correspondent, writer and producer Dana Miller Ervin. “In some cases, these defendants can get sicker while they wait for admission to a state hospital.”
Ervin has been investigating access to mental health care in North Carolina for WFAE for the past two years with the support of FRONTLINE’s Local Journalism Initiative. The initiative is an innovative effort to support and strengthen investigative reporting in communities around the country. It launched in 2019 with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Building on an in-depth radio and digital series, which was released in 2023 by WFAE and FRONTLINE and was recently named a semi-finalist for the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, “Fractured” is directed by Débora Souza Silva, a 2023 recipient of the FRONTLINE/Firelight Media Investigative Journalism Fellowship. The fellowship was created to support independent filmmakers of color interested in journalistic documentary filmmaking about underreported issues in the United States.
WFAE will host a screening of “Fractured” on Mar. 12, at 7 p.m. EST, at the Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City. A conversation with some of the participants from the film will follow the screening. Information is available at www.wfae.org/fracturedtickets
