Welcome to Love Black Culture and this week in Black History, one of the largest bastions of Black Entertainment and stardom launched setting up a company that set many first for Black business. On January 25th 1980, Black Entertainment Television launched to the world. Created by Robert L Johnson, the media entrepreneur saw an opportunity to reach African American audiences through a cable TV channel. Originally broadcasting for two hours a week as a block of programming on USA Network. However in 1983, BET became a full-fledged entity, independent of any other channel or programming block, more similar to the BET we know today.

Having established BET as a successful niche media company, Johnson launched it as a public corporation in 1991. BET was listed on the New York Stock Exchange until 1998, when Johnson and other investors gained private control of the firm. This made BET the first Black owned company to go public on the New York Stock Exchange. In 2000 Johnson and his partners sold BET to Viacom Inc. for $3 billion. The network reaches about 90 million households.

BET's programming began with a wide range of comedy, news and current affairs, public affairs, and music programming, including mainstream rap, hip-hop and R&B music videos. Maybe the most influential program that has been produced by BET was 106 and Park. BET also carries and produces several Award telecasts, including the network's own BET Awards, which were established in 2001 to celebrate African-Americans and diverse minorities in music, acting, sports and other parts of entertainment over the past year.

The company has encountered a lot of criticism as well as a lot of successes. Some critics believe that the channel often reinforces black stereotypes that are detrimental to the culture. However BET has answered this criticism by revamping its programming to better reflect the african american culture. Scott M. Mills is currently the president of Black Entertainment Television.

BET television has had several spin offs over the hers that cater to specific segments of the demographic. These include BET Gospel, BET Hip Hop, BET International, BET on Jazz, BET Soul, BET Jams and BET Her.

To recap this week in black history, Black Entertainment Television premiere on national TV and became the largest black owned company over the years.
