An especially active fire season is exacting a huge toll across several Western states. In California, more than 5,800 personnel, 500 fire trucks and 40 helicopters are battling a fire larger than all of Los Angeles. The Park Fire, as it’s known, is the country’s largest and has ballooned to historic proportions in just over a week. Stephanie Sy reports.

The Park Fire is now California's fourth-largest wildfire in history, Cal Fire said Friday.

The wildfire impacting Butte, Plumas, Shasta and Tehama counties has burned about 399,615 acres and is 25% contained.

More than 560 structures have been destroyed by the wildfire as of Saturday morning.

A sheriff's deputy was killed and two other deputies were wounded in an ambush shooting at a home in Eustis, Florida, just outside Orlando. Two suspects were also found dead.

A new CBS News poll finds Kamala Harris with a slight edge over Donald Trump nationally and tied across the battleground states, and CBS News elections and surveys executive director Anthony Salvanto joined "Face the Nation" to discuss its latest findings. Calling it a "big reset," he pointed out that President Biden, when he was still in the race, trailed Trump by 5 points, but with Harris as the presumptive nominee, "you see more Democrats now say not only are they excited about Harris as the nominee, but that they're going to vote," Salvanto said. Core Democratic constituencies are saying they're going to vote, including Black and women voters, Salvanto said. He also noted that on the question of having the mental and cognitive ability to serve, she leads Trump.

FBI Director Christopher Wray revealed new details authorities have uncovered in their investigation into the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, including the shooter's search history. Wray said the gunman had searched for details about the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy a week before the shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. President Biden gave a prime-time Oval Office address about his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election and his plans for the remainder of his first term.
