In November’s historic election, Americans will decide who will lead the nation for the next four years: Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump.

“The Choice 2024” is the latest installment of FRONTLINE’s critically acclaimed election-year special that has been praised as “richly detailed” (The Wall Street Journal) and “completely riveting” (The Washington Post). The two-hour documentary draws on dozens of revealing interviews with those who know Trump and Harris best to present deeply reported narrative arcs of both candidates’ lives, going all the way back to their childhoods.

To trace Harris’ journey from 1960s Berkeley through her rise as a prosecutor and leading up to her time as the first Black, South Asian and female vice president, “The Choice 2024” team spoke to some of Harris’ childhood friends, college classmates, advisors in California and in the White House, and journalists who have covered her career. To chronicle Trump’s path from New York real estate, to entertainment, to politics, the team tapped into a vast collection of interviews from his 2016 campaign days through the present, with everyone from his niece to business and television associates, biographers, and advisors who worked with him in the White House.

The documentary takes viewers inside key moments in each candidate’s life and examines who Harris and Trump are, how they lead, what shaped their characters, and how they arrived at their dueling visions for America’s future.

Hoffman investigates how and why the standards and laws around Salmonella have failed to keep up with the increasing danger posed by some strains of the bacteria.The film looks closely at one of the largest Salmonella poultry outbreaks on record, when chicken from Foster Farms sickened more than 600 people over 16 months. Delving into the complex world of food safety, the investigation reveals a seeming contradiction: even though hundreds of people were falling ill, Foster Farms was still meeting the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) standards for Salmonella contamination.

This short clip isn't especially noteworthy or interesting. It is the tail end of a live public affairs special that was broadcast by Boston's WBZ-TV in 1977. It is displayed to show that some home video recordings have the potential to hold up reasonably well even after 33 years. This video came from a 3/4-inch U-matic cassette.

Imagine a local television station broadcasting prime-time public affairs specials as a service to their community. That concept seems incomprehensible today. But Boston station WBZ regularly did so in the 1970s with its "Impact" specials. For an entire week at a time, Channel 4 provided in-depth coverage and discussion of an issue of public importance through its newscasts and public affairs specials.

This clip comes from a live "Impact" special about Gay Rights. Note that the program wrapped up at 2:00 in the morning! Veteran local broadcaster Paul Benzaquin is the moderator.
