With a Senate vote in favor last week and expected passage by the House of Representatives, the Respect for Marriage Act is on the verge of becoming law.

Despite this declaration from the Vatican, advocates in Maine say this has no effect on the legality of same-sex marriages in the state.

Both Washington University Transgender Center and University of Missouri Health Care have stopped gender-affirming healthcare services for all transgender minors. Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis region is still providing care within compliance with the law.

WashU said providing care like puberty blockers and hormones, could put it at risk for lawsuits. Minors prescribed puberty blockers or hormones before Aug. 28 would qualify under the new law to continue treatments but the university says it could put them at risk for legal challenges.

Gender-affirming health care has come into question in some states, even as far as being banned by state laws. LGBTQ advocate Kat Rohn, the executive director of OutFront Minnesota, said the most important thing for parents to do for their transgender children is to support them and listen to them.

Around 170 dignitaries and heads of state are expected to attend the pope's funeral on Saturday.
