FRONTLINE and ProPublica investigated how secret electronic surveillance missed catching the plotters behind the deadly 2008 siege in Mumbai and how American-born David Coleman Headley, a former DEA informant, played a key role in the plot. (Aired 2015)

When Edward Snowden exposed the U.S. National Security Agency’s secret mass surveillance programs, defenders of the NSA said the spying was necessary, and they produced an example: David Coleman Headley, an American recruited by Pakistani terrorists to help plan the 2008 Mumbai attack known as “India’s 9/11.” But was Headley’s capture an intelligence success? ProPublica reporter Sebastian Rotella investigated those claims, unearthing evidence of how intelligence agencies didn’t stop the 2008 attack in which 166 people were killed. “American Terrorist” is an updated and expanded version of 2011’s “A Perfect Terrorist.”
“American Terrorist” was a FRONTLINE production with Left/Right Docs in association with 2over10 Media in partnership with ProPublica. It was written, produced and directed by Thomas Jennings. In this 2009 follow-up to the groundbreaking documentary “The New Asylums,” FRONTLINE examined what happens to people who are living with mental illness when they leave prison. (Aired 2009)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate
In 2005’s “The New Asylums,” FRONTLINE filmmakers Karen O’Connor and Miri Navasky went deep inside the Ohio prison system as it struggled to provide care to thousands of inmates with mental illness.
In 2009’s “The Released,” they returned to Ohio to tell the next chapter in this story. That year, more than 700,000 people were expected to be released from prison across the U.S., more than half of them dealing with mental illness. Typically, these people would leave prison with a bus ticket, $75 in cash, and two weeks' worth of medication to treat their illness. Studies from the time showed that nearly two-thirds of people with mental illness released from prison — often poor and out of touch with friends and family — were rearrested within 18 months. “The Released” offered an intimate look at the lives of people with serious mental illnesses who were released from prison but struggled to remain free.

Nearly half a million people in America’s prisons and jails were dealing with mental illness in 2005. FRONTLINE examined mental health in the prison system. (Aired 2005)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate
When “The New Asylums” was originally released, 16 percent of America’s prison population could be classified as having a severe mental illness such as schizophrenia, major depression or bipolar disorder, according to National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. The numbers were much higher when taking into consideration other types of mental illnesses and disorders.
As sheriffs and prison wardens became the unexpected and ill-equipped gatekeepers of this burgeoning population, they raised a troubling issue: were jails and prisons turning into America’s new mental hospitals?
With unprecedented access to prison therapy sessions, mental health treatment meetings, crisis wards, and prison disciplinary tribunals, FRONTLINE went inside Ohio’s state prison system to present a searing exploration of the complex topic of mental health behind bars and a moving portrait of the individuals at the center of this issue.

FRONTLINE examined the tactics, techniques and cultural ramifications of marketing moguls targeting teenagers. (Aired 2001)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate
By 2001, when “The Merchants of Cool” was first released, teenagers had become the hottest consumer demographic in America — spending $100 billion and influencing their parents to spend another $50 billion. The documentary explored how the creators and sellers of popular culture targeted this coveted demographic: They spent their days sifting through reams of market research data. They conducted surveys and focus groups. They combed the streets, schools and malls, hot on the trail of the "next big thing" that would snare the attention of teenagers.
The documentary included interviews with top marketers, media executives and cultural and media critics, and explored the symbiotic relationship between the media and teens, as each looked to the other for their identity. “The Merchants of Cool” explored whether the marketers were simply reflecting teen desires or whether they manufactured those desires in a bid to secure the lucrative teen market.
“The Merchants of Cool” was directed by Barak Goodman, produced by Goodman and Rachel Dretzin and written by Dretzin. Douglas Rushkoff was the correspondent and consulting producer. David Fanning was the executive producer of FRONTLINE.

Two main strategies for funding retirement are lifetime pensions and 401(k)-style savings plans, but both are in trouble. Buffeted by pension cuts, corporate bankruptcies, and stock market crashes, most boomers can now expect to be working into their retirement years. FRONTLINE, WFAE & Firelight Media investigate the long waits for mental health care that defendants who are deemed too sick to stand trial face in North Carolina.

From FRONTLINE (PBS)’s Local Journalism Initiative, the Charlotte, North Carolina, NPR station @WFAENews and @FirelightMediaNYC, “Fractured” examines how the country’s mental health crisis is playing out within the criminal justice system in North Carolina, a state where it’s been harder to access mental health care than in most others.
"We've found that these defendants may wait months in jail, sometimes more than a year, for the treatment they need to be deemed well enough to go to court," says “Fractured” correspondent, writer and producer Dana Miller Ervin. “In some cases, these defendants can get sicker while they wait for admission to a state hospital.”
Ervin has been investigating access to mental health care in North Carolina for WFAE for the past two years with the support of FRONTLINE’s Local Journalism Initiative. The initiative is an innovative effort to support and strengthen investigative reporting in communities around the country. It launched in 2019 with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Building on an in-depth radio and digital series, which was released in 2023 by WFAE and FRONTLINE and was recently named a semi-finalist for the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, “Fractured” is directed by Débora Souza Silva, a 2023 recipient of the FRONTLINE/Firelight Media Investigative Journalism Fellowship. The fellowship was created to support independent filmmakers of color interested in journalistic documentary filmmaking about underreported issues in the United States.
WFAE will host a screening of “Fractured” on Mar. 12, at 7 p.m. EST, at the Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City. A conversation with some of the participants from the film will follow the screening. Information is available at www.wfae.org/fracturedtickets

FRONTLINE investigates the Fed’s epic economic experiment to revive the U.S. economy with what has been called an “easy money” policy and the far-reaching and sometimes unintended consequences.
“If we hadn't been driving our economy for 14 years with easy money and then tried to really quickly undo that now, we wouldn't be having these problems,” former top banking regulator Sheila Bair said in the documentary.
From the 2008 recession, to the COVID pandemic, to the rise in inflation, to the current economic uncertainty, “Age of Easy Money” charts the American economy’s tumultuous course, the fragility of the financial system and the widening gap between Wall Street and Main Street.
The documentary examines what led to the Fed’s recent decisions to hike interest rates at a historic pace and probes the ongoing effects, offering a comprehensive and timely examination of the role of the institution at the heart of America’s economy.
The documentary is supported by The WNET Group’s Chasing the Dream, a public media initiative that examines poverty, justice and economic opportunity in America.

Revisit FRONTLINE’s seminal documentary on how the Israeli-Palestinian peace process begun at Oslo was derailed and ultimately undone by the dynamics of politics and violence on both sides. (Aired 2002)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate
"Shattered Dreams of Peace: The Road From Oslo" includes interviews with key figures from both sides of the negotiating table including Benjamin Netanyahu, Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres, Saeb Erekat and Ehud Barak.
The documentary traced how the cautious optimism in the aftermath of Arafat and then-Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin signing the 1993 Oslo Accord was undermined in the following years by violence and major setbacks. It explored the growing threat to the peace process posed by radical nationalist factions among both Jews and Palestinians — groups, including Hamas, that opposed all compromise between the two peoples. The documentary also examined the U.S. role in the peace process, including the U.S.-brokered negotiations at Wye River in 1998, Camp David in 2000, and in Taba, Egypt, in 2001.

FRONTLINE and @WashingtonPost investigate how a young Air National Guardsman, Jack Teixeira, allegedly leaked classified documents on the Discord chat platform for over a year — and why he wasn’t stopped earlier.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate.
It was one of the biggest leaks of government secrets in U.S. history: more than 300 pages that included highly classified information from secret Pentagon assessments of the war in Ukraine, to revelations about Iran’s nuclear program, Chinese aircraft carriers and the killing of ISIS terrorists.
The leaked documents, which came to light in April 2023, were posted on the gaming and chat platform Discord, allegedly by 21-year-old Jack Teixeira, who had managed to get a security clearance despite a troubled past. What was his motivation? Why didn’t the military stop him? And what was the role of Discord, a privacy-oriented platform popular with teenage gamers?
FRONTLINE and The Washington Post investigate those questions in “The Discord Leaks.” From an award-winning team that includes FRONTLINE directors Thomas Jennings and Annie Wong and Post reporters Shane Harris, Samuel Oakford and Chris Dehghanpoor, the documentary draws on months of groundbreaking reporting by The Post, including access to hundreds of the leaked documents its reporters obtained. The documentary includes new collaborative reporting with FRONTLINE revealing in greater detail Texeira’s online world, and his history of violent threats, racism and conspiracy theories. The documentary also features exclusive on-camera interviews with the alleged leaker’s close online confidantes, Discord’s VP of trust and safety and a former head of the Air National Guard.
The FRONTLINE-Washington Post investigation raises tough questions about how the military’s vetting process addresses applicants’ internet activity, how Discord polices hate speech on its platform, and why the alleged leaker — who has pleaded not guilty — wasn’t stopped sooner despite multiple red flags.
To illustrate the extent of the leaked material, FRONTLINE and The Washington Post used images of classified documents in this film that had been previously released in news reports, on social media and elsewhere on the internet.

The vast majority of felony convictions in the U.S. are the result of plea bargains, not jury trials. In this 90-minute documentary, FRONTLINE explored the moral, judicial and constitutional implications of plea bargains’ role in the justice system. (Aired 2004)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate
It is the centerpiece of America’s judicial process: the trial by jury system that places a defendant’s fate in the hands of a jury of one’s peers. But most criminal cases in the U.S. never reach a jury and instead are settled through plea bargains in which a person agrees to plead guilty in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Proponents say plea bargains are the safety valve that keeps cases moving through the U.S.’s backlogged courts. Critics contend that the push to resolve cases through plea bargains jeopardizes the constitutional rights of defendants, who may be pressured to admit their guilt whether they’re guilty or not.
"The Plea," from acclaimed filmmaker Ofra Bikel, told the stories of several people — facing different charges in different parts of the country — with one thing in common: the dilemma of confronting a plea. The documentary also interviewed experts on the criminal justice system, and asked tough questions about the practice of relying on plea bargains to expedite justice.

When “Supplements and Safety” aired, it was estimated that half of all Americans took a health supplement every day, from fish oil to multivitamins to diet pills. However, the acting commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration at the time noted in “Supplements and Safety” that, “The FDA does not do any review of dietary supplements before they come onto the market, and I think that all consumers need to understand this.”
From director Neil Docherty, correspondent Gillian Findlay and Anahad O’Connor, then a reporter for The New York Times Well blog, “Supplements and Safety” explored the limited government regulation and oversight of supplement companies, and examined cases of contamination and serious health problems.

FRONTLINE traces Elon Musk’s long and often troubled relationship with Twitter, following his journey from being one of the platform’s most provocative users to becoming its owner.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate.
Elon Musk completed his acquisition of the social media company formerly called Twitter nearly a year ago. At a time of intense polarization in the U.S. and worldwide, the move placed the richest man in the world in charge of one of the world’s most important platforms for news and political debate — and also put Musk squarely at the center of an ongoing debate about the limits of free speech and the spread of lies online.
This two-hour documentary from the team behind “Amazon Empire” and “The Facebook Dilemma” pulls back the curtain on the influential social media platform’s inner workings both before and after Musk’s takeover. In extraordinary, in-depth interviews, former Twitter employees give remarkable first-person accounts of how controversial content moderation decisions were made in the pre-Musk era, including the banning of former President Donald Trump after Jan. 6, 2021.
Former Twitter employees also give first-person accounts of the changes Musk made inside Twitter after buying the company, shedding new light on questions about free speech, hate speech and safety that have intensified during his tenure at the helm of the platform. “Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover” probes the profound impact Musk’s decisions have had on politics, speech and culture.

Following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel and amid Israel’s retaliation in Gaza, this 90-minute documentary offers a sweeping examination of critical moments leading up to this crisis, and the pivotal role of a central player: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate
Starting with the Oslo Accords and continuing through to the current war in Gaza, “Netanyahu, America & the Road to War in Gaza” draws on years of reporting and takes an incisive look at the long history of failed peace efforts and violent conflict in the region — and the increasing tensions between Israel and its ally, the U.S., over the war’s catastrophic toll and what comes next.
The documentary traces the tenure of Israel’s longest-serving prime minister and the years of jockeying between him, U.S. presidents and the Palestinians. It features firsthand accounts of insiders and advisors to Netanyahu, U.S. presidents and Palestinian leadership, as well as key insights from experts and observers of the decades-long conflict. Painting a revealing portrait of Netanyahu’s political evolution and fateful decisions, the film also draws on past interviews from FRONTLINE’s 2016 documentary “Netanyahu at War.”
“Netanyahu, America & the Road to War in Gaza” also shows how, in the wake of President Joe Biden’s initial embrace of Netanyahu in response to Oct. 7, the relationship has become increasingly fractious, with the president pressing Israel to embrace a two-state solution to the conflict, and the prime minister vowing not to “repeat the mistake of Oslo.”

The award-winning documentary “20 Days in Mariupol” follows Chernov as he and his Ukrainian AP colleagues become trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol, struggling to continue their work documenting atrocities of the Russian invasion. The last international journalists remaining in the city as Russian forces close in, Chernov, photographer Evgeniy Maloletka and field producer Vasilisa Stepanenko capture what become some of the most defining images of the war: dying children, mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital, and more.
“20 Days in Mariupol” draws on Chernov’s daily news dispatches and personal footage of his own country at war. The result is a raw and haunting account of a journalist risking his life to share the truth of the conflict with the world.
Made in partnership with The Associated Press, “20 Days in Mariupol” has had a decorated run on the 2023 film festival circuit — including at the Sundance Film Festival, the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), the Sheffield Film Festival and the DocEdge Film Festival.

In late 2011, nearly nine years after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq under President George W. Bush, U.S. troops left the country while President Barack Obama was in office. In “The Rise of ISIS,” FRONTLINE correspondent Martin Smith examined how Iraq began coming apart after the American withdrawal, probed the Obama administration’s Iraq and Syria policies, examined mistakes and miscalculations that enabled the terror group’s rise, and explored what it meant for the U.S. to return to Iraq starting in 2014 as ISIS seized wide swaths of territory there and in Syria.

Billie Eilish - Male Fantasy (Official Live Performance) | Vevo
Billie Eilish's trademark whisper has gained more and more emotional power in the last four years. The secret-sharing sense of intimacy contained in the pop phenom's voice brims with the kind of textural qualities that pull fans deep into the story she's telling in any given song. Sometimes dreamy, sometimes fierce, always fetching. The songs from Billie's just-released 'Happier Than Ever' album have all used her signature sound to great advantage. Our first Official Live Performance of "Your Power" set the template for this live project's cozy setting. Designed after brainstorming creative sessions between the singer and our production team, our second performance of ""Male Fantasy"" moves to the bedroom, with brother Finneas once again providing the soft strumming of his acoustic guitar. Spend some time absorbing how the siblings compliment each other on the song, and hang close: there are more exclusive performances on their way.

Lyrics:
Home alone, tryin' not to eat
Distract myself with pornography
I hate the way she looks at me
I can't stand the dialogue, she would never be
That satisfied, it's a male fantasy
I'm going back to therapy
'Cause I loved you then and I love you now
And I don't know how
Guess it's hard to know when nobody else comes around
If I'm getting over you
Or just pretending to
Be alright, convince myself I hate you
I got a call from a girl I used to know
We were inseparable years ago
Thought we'd get along but it wasn't so
And it's all I think about when I'm behind the wheel
I worry this is how I'm always gonna feel
But nothing lasts, I know the deal
But I loved you then and I love you now
And I don't know how
Guess it's hard to know when nobody else comes around
If I'm getting over you
Or just pretending to
Be alright, convince myself I hate you
Can't get over you
No matter what I do
I know I should but I could never hate you

Prince Royce is in one of the most revelatory stages of his career. His new album ‘Llamada Perdida’ is one of his most personal works to date, with lyrics inspired by breakups, romantic relationships and personal challenges. It’s also one of his most sonically ambitious works, with collaborators as diverse as Gabito Ballesteros, Boogie wit da Hoodie, Lenny Tavárez and Paloma Mami. “I think that it was difficult for me to put some of these songs out,” Royce told Rolling Stone. “Ultimately, I had fun with it, and I think it was a therapeutic experience for me. It gave me closure.” The risks paid off in dividends. The collaboration with Ballesteros turned into his 24th number one hit on the Billboard Latin Airplay chart. About his song “La Corriente”, which he performed live at Vevo's studio in New York, the crooner says that it’s a “sexy” track that highlights how complex bachata as a genre can be. “It’s hard in bachata to mix a lot of sounds without it being disturbing to the ear,” Royce said. “This is bachata in 4K.” Watching “Champaña” performed live, with the intensity and drama that Royce’s voice carries, is a testament to the unforgettable sonic highways the Dominican is opening for the genre.

Camila Cabello - No Doubt | Vevo Official Live Performance
Camila Cabello says that making her third album ‘Familia' was “fun, joyful, and easy.” That sentiment extends to our Official Live Performance collaboration, which was staged at a Simi Valley, California ranch where blockbuster films are shot. Cabello commanded the camera like an A-list actor while performing four songs from the new record. The album's tender artwork, with Camila embracing a young cousin, parallels its heartfelt title, and she's made it clear that this music was meant to explore her family's roots. Both Latin rhythms and Spanish-language vocals - imbued throughout the album - help in that goal. This “No Doubt” performance sizzles under the West Coast sun. Its sultry lyrics belie the fact that it's really about the ebbs, flows, and failures of a meaningful relationship. Yet another example of the superstar’s continued growth and maturity.

Doja Cat - Say So - Live Performance (Vevo LIFT Live Sessions)
Welcome to the world of Doja Cat. Born and raised in L.A., the 24-year-old self-taught singer-rapper is a vet of sorts. The arts were central to her upbringing, and she started sharing her music on Soundcloud back in 2013. A year later she dropped her much-buzzed-about ‘Purrr!’ EP. Ever since, she’s nurtured an ever-growing array of feverish fans who revere her for combining a radiant charisma with unique flow and tongue-in-cheek lyrics (see: the irresistible“MOOO!”). Seems like Doja has designed her version of alt-R&B to take off in any direction she chooses. Tours with Lizzo and Theophilius London led right into 2018’s impressive ‘Amala,’ her debut proper, followed by last year’s ‘Hot Pink.’ That album’s “Say So” is currently clocking big numbers. Arresting visuals help. Her videos for both her radio juggernaut and "Rules" are wildly fun. When the Vevo production team united with the feline phenom to figure out performance ideas, the creative juices were flowing. The goal? Put the “cat” in Doja Cat - a decision that resulted in what’s probably our most ambitious studio build to date for a LIFT performance. For her “Streets” performance, we built Doja a massive bowl of 2%, where she was clearly in her element. And if that isn’t peak, then the human-sized scratching house of her "Say So" performance is. Dressed in full cat-ear regalia, she pawed her way through the two-story structure, purring the lyrics to her R&B throwback jam, which currently sits nicely in the Top 10 pop charts and is a smash hit for the spring of 2020.

The Weeknd - Faith | Vevo Official Live Performance
The Weeknd's 'After Hours' is one of those albums that paints vivid pictures. Abel Tesfaye's music has a dark radiance that's both dreamy and eerie, and the record's videos flaunt their sensuality with a macabre grace. So we were thrilled to work with the singer and their team on three exclusive performances from the 'After Hours' song list. "Alone Again" and "In Your Eyes" are live, and now "Faith" joins them. Time to get inside The Weeknd's mind.
