A few years ago, Linwood Riddick, of Summerville, S.C., learned of the 1968 "Orangeburg Massacre" protest at South Carolina State University, during which three Black students were killed. The Vietnam War veteran and retired shop owner felt compelled to honor their sacrifice by graduating from the HBCU – at the age of 79. Steve Hartman reports.

In 1925, what would become Delta Air Lines started as the world's first aerial crop-dusting operation in the Mississippi Delta region. Nearly a century after its first passenger flight, the airline has survived mergers, recessions and bankruptcy, growing from a single passenger route to an international carrier with more than 5,000 flights a day. Kari Cox, of Culloden, West Virginia, and her husband, Bill, head a large family of mostly adopted children, many with special needs. But when one of their adopted children, Maribeth, died following a car accident, Kari doubted she could ever open her home, and her heart, to another child. In 2009, when Alex Matisse founded East Fork Pottery, in Asheville, N.C., he didn't want to use the name of his great-grandfather, the artist Henri Matisse. But his ceramics took off with fans dubbed "Potheads," who buy, share and trade East Fork dinnerware online. And so, about 18 months ago, Alex decided it was time to use his own name – and to grace his ceramics with the imagery of his famous forebear. Correspondent Lee Cowan reports.
