LGBTQ+
Stepping out of the sixties and in the wake of the Stonewall Riots, (considered the birth of the modern LGBTQIA+ liberation movement), the 1970s would prove to be a decade energized by queer activism, political and social change and pride. Celebrating such a vitally important legacy, this collection of gay protest and parade films is an essential multifaceted document of a period of revolution and jubilation.
Heading this essential set is the incredibly poignant and mesmerizing feature documentary Gay USA (1977) from pioneering gay filmmaker Arthur J. Bressan, Jr. (Forbidden Letters (1979), Buddies (1985)). Bressan, Jr. documents aspects of the gay rights movement during the year of 1977 capturing the intersections of diversity in queer life; from vox pop style interviews with lesbian feminists, street drag queens, and straight allies to taking a look at the fight against notorious homophobe Anita Bryant and her "Save Our Children" campaign. Conversations with dedicated gay activists and individuals who have recently come out are masterfully intercut with images of the vast spectrum of LGBT individuals and their supporters proudly marching through sun-kissed streets. As well as being politically and socially important and a perfect snapshot of a period in time of gay solidarity and resistance, it is also a picturesque sparkling film with inspired visuals from Bressan, Jr. and his team of camera operators. Along with this magnetic feature length film comes four short films capturing queer liberation and protest: Lesbian activist Lilli Vincenz's Gay and Proud (1970), which documents the first Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade, held in New York City on June 28, 1970, to commemorate the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the lesbian-centric Gay Power (1971) from legendary artists/activists Sharon Hayes and Kate Millett and the Women's Liberation Cinema and two San Francisco focused films: Parade (1972) from artistic all-rounder Ronald Chase, which gives us an insight into the city's first official gay pride parade post-Stonewall and Freedom Day Parade (1974) by iconic filmmaker and choreographer Wakefield Poole (Boys in the Sand (1971)) which was shot at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day.
Arthur Bressan created a gay-America panorama when he commissioned filmmakers throughout the country to record all June 1977 Lesbian and Gay Pride parades and marches. He then cut on-the-street interviews--gay women and men talking about their lovers and how they came out--with the resulting footage, including lesbians marching against housework and drag queens protesting fascism, to create this revolutionary documentary.
"When the Anita Bryant debacle happened I was hurled into making this political documentary. My naive dream was that if we all saw ourselves in our numbers we would never buy into the guilt trip again. Not from Anita Bryant or from [NYC] Mayor Koch or from Cardinal Cook. Not even from AIDS...."
—Arthur Bressan

Considered to be the first documentary by and about LGBTQ people, "Gay USA" was directed by Arthur J. Bressan Jr. and chronicles the '70s Gay Rights Movement via Pride events in major cities nationwide. Some San Francisco sequences were filmed in 1978 in the wake of the murder of openly gay City Supervisor Harvey Milk and Anita Bryant's anti-Civil Rights campaign.

This short clip isn't especially noteworthy or interesting. It is the tail end of a live public affairs special that was broadcast by Boston's WBZ-TV in 1977. It is displayed to show that some home video recordings have the potential to hold up reasonably well even after 33 years. This video came from a 3/4-inch U-matic cassette.
Below is information about the clip's content.
Imagine a local television station broadcasting prime-time public affairs specials as a service to their community. That concept seems incomprehensible today. But Boston station WBZ regularly did so in the 1970s with its "Impact" specials. For an entire week at a time, Channel 4 provided in-depth coverage and discussion of an issue of public importance through its newscasts and public affairs specials.
This clip comes from a live "Impact" special about Gay Rights. Note that the program wrapped up at 2:00 in the morning! Veteran local broadcaster Paul Benzaquin is the moderator.

Despite the Church's pronouncement that homosexuality is a 'grievous sin', some Christians believe it is possible to be gay and in step with their faith. In this report, Peter France speaks to some of the leading figures in the Gay Christian Movement, including clerics and academics, who have taken inspiration from an American sect to form their own religious organisation. Yet some Christians still feel pressure to remain in the closet and refrain from speaking openly about both their sexuality and their faith.
Perceptions of homosexuality, identity and sexual orientation in Irish society.
With more people opening up about their sexuality and demanding reform of the laws in Ireland, the Irish Gay Rights Movement is gaining in strength.
‘Tuesday Report’ examines how and why gay people in Ireland are becoming more vocal and the possibility of the laws surrounding homosexuality being changed.
Reporter Cathal O’Shannon writes in the RTÉ Guide.
The men and women in this film look just like you and me. They are accountants, civil servants, students, shop-workers, manual workers, office workers. The only difference is that their sexual orientation is towards their own sex. They speak for themselves and seek our understanding.
In this excerpt from the programme, Irish men and women who have publicly come out as gay discuss the nature of homosexuality and the preconceptions that people have about them.
Jimmy describes both homosexuality and heterosexuality as a response of individuals to other individuals. He believes that perceptions some people have of homosexuals are ludicrous.
It is not a situation where homosexuals themselves are a mass of deviants who roam around the streets spotting people alone.
Cathal O’Shannon admits that he too has preconceived ideas about homosexuality. Much to the amusement of the group, which includes leader of the campaign for homosexual law reform David Norris.
I would have thought that most homosexuals would have been camp, prancing queens.
David Norris says homosexuality is just one part of an individual’s personality. He believes that if homosexuals are more visible, then they can break down the preconceptions.
After a visit to a gay disco at the Hirschfeld Centre, Cathal O’Shannon speaks to openly gay men and women who have no regrets about coming outl.
Sexuality of any sort is not easily discussed in Irish family circles, but many Irish mothers and fathers are having to face the fact that a son or a daughter is homosexual.
This episode of ‘Tuesday Report’ was broadcast on 22 February 1977. The reporter is Cathal O’Shannon.
It was a time before pride parades, the rainbow flag, the White Night riots and HIV and AIDS devastated a community. We've been digging through the ABC7 archives and found an amazing glimpse of gay life in San Francisco and how it was covered in the news many decades ago. The series was called Bay Gays. It was originally produced and shown in 1976. Now you can watch it in its entirety. Read the full transcripts here: https://abc7ne.ws/2J7Xkgj
On 12 July 1977, ITN interviewed Denis Lemon, the editor of 'Gay News', who had just been found guilty of blasphemous libel after his magazine published a poem written by poet James Kirkup. Entitled 'The Love that Dares to Speak its Name', the poem's narrator, a Roman centurion, describes having sex with Jesus, and claims that Jesus had sex with a number of other biblical characters including several of his disciples. A private prosecution was brought against Gay News and Denis Lemon by notorious conservative activist Mary Whitehouse, who argued the poem constituted a blasphemous libel of the Christian religion and the vilification of Jesus Christ.
Lemon's suspended sentence was eventually quashed by the Court of Appeal in 1978, but the whole episode showed the extent to which gay art and culture was still subjected to a greater degree of scrutiny and censorship than works of the straight community. While homosexuality had been decriminalised a full decade before, there was still much progress to be made in advancing civil liberties.

Lyrics:
Where do I belong?
Tell me your story and I'll tell you mine
I'm all ears, take your time, we got all night
Show me the rivers crossed, the mountains scaled
Show me who made you walk all the way here
Settle down, put your bags down
(Ooh) You're alright now
We don't need to be related to relate
We don't need to share genes or a surname
You are
You are
My chosen
Chosen family
So what if we don't look the same?
We been going through the same thing
You are
You are
My chosen
Chosen family
Hand me a pen and I'll rewrite the pain
When you're ready, we'll turn the page together
Open a bottle, it's time we celebrate
Who you were, who you are
We're one and the same, yeah, yeah
We don't need to be related to relate
We don't need to share genes or a surname
You are
You are
My chosen
Chosen family
So what if we don't look the same?
We been going through the same thing
You are
You are
My chosen
Chosen family
I, I chose you
You chose me
I chose

I chose you
You chose me
We're alright now

June Pride Month is over. We are pretty sure Presidential candidate and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is happy about that. But it’s never too early to think about Pride Month 2024. South Florida’s Stonewall Pride Parade made a major announcement today that the parade will return on the world famous Wilton Drive on Saturday, June 15, 2024. The big news is a modification to the street festival and parade. The street festival will begin at 3 pm as hundreds of organizations will participate with booths for the 2024 festival. The breaking news is that the parade will move to a night illumination parade that will step off at 8 pm from Fort Lauderdale High School to 5 points. Floats, motorized units and walking groups will plan on being illuminated for the estimated 60,000 parade participants. Stonewall Pride Parade will be broadcast LIVE by Hotspots Magazine Happening Out Television Network on Roku and Apple Television by Queer News Tonight anchor Al Ferguson. More than 100,000 watched the 2023 streaming broadcast. Stonewall Pride Parade and Festival is one of Florida’s largest pride events. Stonewall is produced by the non-profit (501c3) Hotspots Happening Out media network. Stonewall 2024 will likely be the largest in its history as it will coincide with the Fall 2024 Presidential Election. A huge number of celebrities and politicians have participated in Wilton Manors Stonewall including Senators, Congress, Hillary Clinton and many more. So get ready for our nighttime celebration on June 15, 2024.

On Saturday a unique new art installation opened in South Florida presented by Hotspots Magazine & Happening Out Television Network. The Art Gallery with Dennis Dean had a grand opening reception with more than 100 invited dignitaries from the LGBTQ+ arts, service, business and political communities. The Art Gallery is curated by noted photographer and artist Dennis Dean whose works have appeared in countless galleries and publications across the country including our own Hotspots Magazine. The space will allow a variety of artists of art photography, acrylic, mixed-media & alcohol ink art, sculptures, fashion and even live models to display. Believed to be the first of its kind in Florida, the expansive gallery is located on main street in Oakland Park at the original offices of the largest LGBTQ+ media network in Florida. New offices opened last year to Wilton Drive and Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors making the opportunity of the Art Gallery possible. WMEG, Hotspots and Happening Out Television President Jeffrey Stirling said at the opening, attended by Queer News Tonight anchors Al Ferguson and Fay What, that “This is a unique not for profit opportunity for LGBTQ+ artists to be celebrated in our community. It will give many artists a place to exhibit without significant fees or other issues that prevent their work from being seen. We are very proud to be able to do this for our dynamic LGBTQ+ community."

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Deriving its name from combining June and nineteenth, it is celebrated on the anniversary of the order by Major General Gordon Granger proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865. The year 2023 marks the 158 anniversary of their freedom. Originating in Galveston, Juneteenth has since been observed annually in various parts of the United States, often broadly celebrating African American culture. The day was first recognized as a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law after the efforts of Lula Briggs Galloway, Opal Lee, and others. The holiday is considered the longest-running African American holiday and has been called America's second Independence Day. Therefore Happening Out Honors Juneteenth and African Americans for their contributions to American History. Juneteenth is usually celebrated on the third Saturday in June. Historian Mitch Kachun suggests that celebrations of the end of slavery have three goals, to celebrate, to educate, and to agitate.

Mrs. Ashly is set to commence her role during the gallery's Black History Month Exhibit in February, the Opening Reception on February 3, and the gallery's Women’s History Month Exhibit in March, reinforcing the commitment to diverse and inclusive representation. As a queer woman of color, Ashly's appointment not only contributes to the gallery's mission but also adds a valuable perspective to the team, enriching the cultural tapestry of the space. Kedna Ashly is a self-taught digital artist based in South Florida who crafts artwork that shares personal experiences, lessons, unique expressions, and perspectives on life.

Tony Ardolino, also known as Tony Cannoli, will be repping the U.S. in the upcoming Mr. Gay World pageant. Cannoli and the other participants are already in South Africa for the event. And while we have to wait until Friday to find out if Cannoli will now be the gayest in the world, here's a little bit about our fearless "queen."
After high school, Cannoli moved to Los Angeles where he did commercials with actors like David Hasselhoff and the Mistress of Dark herself, Elvira. Then, he spent two years in Singapore working for Universal. He’s also toured with musicals Grease and Happy Days. Cannoli started his pageant life by going for Mr. Gay Maine, which he won. After, he went on to win Mr. Gay World U.S.A., which was broadcast by HotSpots! Happening Out Television from our home studio at Sunshine Cathedral.

Women's History Month traces its roots to 1978 in Santa Rosa, California, where the Education Task Force of Sonoma Country Commission on the Status of Women organized a "Women's History Week" celebration. This was scheduled during the week of March 8 to align with International Women's Day. In 1981, Congress made a law saying there would be a special week in March to celebrate women's history. In 1987, Congress decided that March would officially be called "Women's History Month." Since then, every year, the president has made an official statement declaring March as Women's History Month. Hotspots Happening Out Art Gallery With Dennis Dean is contributing to this celebration by arranging an opening reception dedicated to and by lesbian & queer women artists on March 2. The FayWhat?! Show host and Queer News Tonight anchor FayWhat will be hosting this special event. The Women: Power Imagined, A Celebration of Women Artists And Art will be held from March 1 through March 30. The celebration will feature performances, exhibitions, and talks. You do not want to miss this month-long gala!
