Children of Adam is edited from two National Geographic documentaries. Follow Dr Spencer Wells as he retraces humanity's incredible journey from East Africa to every corner of the planet.
Every human being alive today shares the same pair of common ancestors: “Y-chromosomal Adam” and “Mitochondrial Eve”. Genetic markers within DNA also show that, around 55,000 years ago, all modern human lineages outside of Africa were terminated except for one family group: “Y-chromosomal Noah” and haplogroup L3. That small band went on to populate the rest of the planet.
Modern humans appeared in East Africa about 200,000 years ago. By 50,000 years ago they were in South Asia and Australia. By 40,000 years ago they had colonized Eurasia and by 12,000 BCE had reached North and South America. The spread of modern humans coincides with the extinction of the megafauna (giant ground sloths, giant flightless birds, American elephants, etc) and the disappearance of all other hominids such as Neanderthals. Modern humans fashioned composite tools, built huts and crafted boats. They also developed religious traditions and accumulated knowledge through oral culture. Most were nomadic moving from place to place as they hunted and foraged but where food was abundant, such as in rich coastal areas, they lived in villages. When Picasso first saw the 25,000-year-old cave paintings at Altamira in northern Spain he was stunned. “None of us could paint like that,” he said. “After Altamira all is decadence.”
'The art of making fire ... is probably the greatest [discovery], excepting language, ever made by man.' Charles Darwin, The Descent of Man
Around the flickering fire, hominids danced and clapped and voiced distinctive sounds in imitation of bird song, animal calls and warnings. Voiced repeatedly, the ritual noises began to acquire symbolic meaning. The ritual followed the hunt and the new sounds were used for identification, coordination and preplanning. For foragers, they became objects, quantities, qualities and were worked into nursery rhymes. The intellectual was superimposed with the metric in ever greater ordered complexity until, about 200,000 years ago, "Y-chromosomal Adam" and "Mitochondrial Eve" were born with a beneficial mutation and fully awoke to the power of language. Designated in the Bible as "the tree of life" and "the tree of knowledge of good and evil" (Genesis 2:9), conceptual thought allowed modern humans to contemplate and dominate their bodies and the world around them becoming moral beings endowed with free will.

The lion is one of the big cats in the Felidae family and a member of genus Panthera. It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996, as populations in African range countries declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Lion populations are untenable outside designated protected areas. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes of concern. The West African lion population is listed as Critically Endangered since 2016.

New York City is one of the most wasteful cities in the world. But none of its trash is actually processed in NYC. It's sent to waste-to-energy facilities and landfills as far away as Ohio and South Carolina. It takes a vast network of sanitation workers, trucks, trains, cranes, and barges — and $429 million a year — to get it there.

According to the EPA, the national recycling rate in the U.S. is only about 34%. That means most of our solid waste goes to landfills and incinerators - including recyclable items like paper, glass, metal and plastic. Massive amounts of food waste that can be composted is clogging landfills, creating dangerous greenhouse gases. Many cities are starting to tackle this problem by implementing policies to help curb the waste by recycling and composting more. It's known as the "zero waste" movement, and San Francisco is on the forefront. Other cities that have zero waste goals include Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Austin, and Oakland. But San Francisco has been the most aggressive. In 2009 the board of supervisors passed an ordinance requiring all residents and business to recycle and compost their waste, making it the first American city to make composting mandatory. Its goal is to achieve zero waste by 2020, and it has diverted 80% of its waste from landfills so far. Now the city is getting attention from all around the world. Government officials from China, Italy, France, Denmark, India and many other countries have visited San Francisco's state of the art recycling and composting facilities in hopes of learning how to replicate its success.

Radioactive Waste: A Nuclear Nightmare | ENDEVR Documentary
Living in the Zone - People Who Stayed After the Worst Nuclear Disasters: https://youtu.be/eePm9RGtoQE
Waste is the nuclear industry’s Achilles heel – and its worst nightmare. Proposals to relaunch nuclear power, after most European countries had decided to abandon it, have rekindled the debate between its supporters and opponents. At the heart of the matter is everyone’s fear of radioactive waste. Populations are afraid of it and scientists still have not found a satisfactory way of dealing with it.
Meanwhile, the heads of the industry try to reassure us and politicians avoid the issue. What exactly do we know about nuclear waste? How can citizens get a clear picture of a subject that has always been shrouded in secrecy? By doing an international investigation and going to different countries (France, Germany, Russia, USA), this film aims to provide a worldwide overview of the nuclear waste topic. This “quest for truth” about nuclear waste, makes shines a searchlight into the darkest corner of nuclear power, endeavoring to provide everyone with the keys they need to understand the choices involved and their implications for the future of mankind.

Gold-rush atmosphere in the recycling industry, waste as an economic engine. Every year, 40 million metric tons of waste end up in the trash cans of German households. Thanks to strict regulations and precise specifications for waste separation, this waste is turned into new raw materials.
Paper fibers can be reused up to seven times. In addition, the production of recovered paper uses considerably less water and energy than the production of virgin fiber paper. Thanks to state-of-the-art sorting machines equipped with infrared sensors and magnets, up to 150 million metric tons of scrap metal can now be recycled each year.
According to official statistics, the German recycling industry has generated sales of around 11.4 billion euros in recent years. The documentary provides insights into a booming industry and shows how raw materials are extracted from affluent waste.

Most of the 600 billion pounds of waste that Americans produce every year ends up in landfills. All that trash can have huge impacts on the environment. But modern landfills have found a new use for all that trash — they’re turning it into energy. In spite of their reputation as “dumps,” these landfills are feats of engineering, more akin to construction sites.
One of North America’s biggest landfills lies on the outskirts of Las Vegas. The Apex Landfill is not only one of the country’s largest, it’s also one of the busiest. Because it serves a non-stop city, the landfill must operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It receives upwards of 16 million pounds of trash per day or 5 billion pounds per year.
Landfills like Apex are required to deal with the toxic chemicals they produce, like methane, a greenhouse gas that’s 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide. At Apex, they capture that methane and turn it into energy that powers 11,000 homes in southern Nevada.

China imports more recyclable goods than any other country in the world. But earlier this year, China stopped accepting a long list of imported plastic and paper waste, and implemented much stricter guidelines for what it's willing to take in.
The dramatic policy change is part of a national campaign to reduce the country’s carbon footprint, but China's decision to no longer be the trash collector for the rest of the world is causing major problems for U.S. waste processing operations.
Across the U.S., recyclers had been accustomed to sending major portions of their paper and plastic to China, but now they're scrambling to find other takers.
Already, more than a dozen states have started to giving companies waivers to throw out recyclables, including Massachusetts, where more than 4,000 tons of single-stream recyclables and more than 10,000 tons of glass have been sent to landfills.
VICE News traveled to Massachusetts to visit a processor that used to have an average of a few dozen one-ton cubes of recyclables sitting around and now has thousands.

In 2019, the North American waste management market reached $208 billion. Thanks to advancements in modern chemistry and support from municipal governments, landfills have seen astonishing financial success in recent years. Private companies like Waste Management and Republic Services now own a majority of landfills across the U.S., their stocks outperforming the market every year since 2014. So how exactly are landfills turning a profit out of garbage and just how much money can be made? Watch the video to find out.
A rising industry
America has long remained one of the most wasteful countries in the world, generating 239 million metric tons of garbage every year, about 1,600 to 1,700 pounds per person. While some view it as a threat to our environment and society, the solid waste management industry sees an opportunity.
“It’s a profitable industry,” according to Debra Reinhart, a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors for the EPA. “It’s a difficult industry but it is profitable if it’s done right.”
Two private companies, Waste Management and Republic Services, lead the solid waste management sector. Together they own about 480 landfills out of the 2,627 landfills across the United States. The two companies have seen staggering performance in the market, with the stock prices of both doubling in the past five years. Both Waste Management and Republic Services declined CNBC’s request for an interview.
“They’ve learned how to be best-in-class businesses,” said Michael E. Hoffman, a managing director at Stifel Financial. “Their publicly traded stocks outperformed the market handily between 2015 and 2019 and underpinning it is a meaningful improvement in their free cash flow conversion.” The stocks have continued to outperform.
Tipping fees
Since its inception, landfills have made a majority of their revenue via tipping fees. These fees are charged to trucks that are dropping off their garbage based on their weight per ton.
In 2020, municipal solid waste landfills had an average tipping fee of $53.72 per ton. That translates to roughly $1.4 million a year in approximate average gross revenue for small landfills and $43.5 million a year for large landfills just from gate fees.
Tipping fees have seen steady growth over the past four decades. In 1982, the national average tipping fee sat at $8.07 per ton or about $23.00 when adjusted for inflation. That’s nearly a 133% increase in 35 years.
While tipping fees make landfills sound like a risk-free business, they are still quite an expensive investment. It can cost about $1.1 million to $1.7 million just to construct, operate and close a landfill. For this reason, private companies have replaced municipal governments to own and operate the majority of the landfills across the U.S.
“I think it’s because the trend has been to go larger and larger so the small neighborhood dump can’t exist because of the regulations and the sophistication of the design,” Reinhart said. “So we are tending to see large landfills, which do require a lot of investment upfront.”
