If you found yourself on Halsey’s Instagram in October 2024, you’d have a hard time finding Halsey anywhere. Instead, you’d come face to face with Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell and… oh, wait that IS Halsey! Fans have long marveled at the pop virtuoso’s world building skills (who could forget the ornate, gothic scenery of 2021’s ‘If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power?’), but it feels like Halsey has taken the biggest creative swing of her career with ‘The Great Impersonator.’ She labels it a “confessional concept album.” As the October 25 release day approached, fans watched her inhabit a kaleidoscope of musical heroes. That was only the beginning. We decided to take the nostalgic trip one step further with these Official Live Performances, seeking to answer the questions: “What if Halsey arrived in a different time? What if she recorded in the 1970s, 80s, 90s or early 2000’s?” So we built four interconnected stages reflective of each decade - with vintage outfits and instruments to match. We captured the action on 35mm film for that timeless feel. Leaning into personal authenticity, Halsey did her own makeup. Team Vevo and Team Halsey’s long history of collaboration allowed this to be one of the series’ most ambitious shoots. The fun kicks off on album release day, and spills into the next week. The world got to know Gracie Abrams this year. More importantly, she got to know herself quite a bit better too. That’s the story behind ‘The Secret of Us,’ the singer-songwriter’s lush, confessional, and revelatory second album. The 13-song project arrived this summer in the wake of successful singles “Risk” and “Close to You,” a pair of tracks that stuck a couple toes out from under the whispery quilt of her previous work. An emergence from her shell was foreshadowed: Listeners could find jubilant synths, assertively strummed guitars, and toe-tapping tempos on 2021’s “Mess It Up” and in pockets of her debut album ‘Good Riddance.’ This is an artist who once considered songwriting and singing a “private practice.” During our Extended Play short film, the LA native reflects on how her withdrawn vocal style stemmed from a desire “not to be heard” while practicing and writing in her bedroom. These days, Gracie’s getting heard a lot. ‘The Secret of Us’ debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200. And this will be two autumns in a row that she’s opening for Taylor Swift. Speaking of growing up, "pretty isn't pretty" takes aim the not-so-nice social pressures one faces as the spotlight grows brighter, especially women. Another gut punch delivered on a platter of angsty pop-rock perfection.

There’s a new genre coming out of South Africa, and Tyla is one of its most promising young talents. “Amapiano, it’s the sound right now,” she explained to us after gliding through her DSCVR performances, where she put the emerging blend of house, R&B, and African dance genres such as Kwaito in the spotlight. In Zulu dialects, Amapiano means “the pianos,” a reference to the lounge keys usually weaved into its skipping four-to-the-floor rhythms. Tyla herself is a master of taking its glossiest elements and imbuing them with the sensuality of American R&B. “Getting Late,” her breakout debut, was all about making the most of a night’s final hours. Considering she designs her songs in the shower, it makes sense that a certain steaminess and nonchalance runs through recent bops “Been Thinking” and “Girl Next Door.” But like a rose garden, there’s thorns nestled between those Tyla’s delicate sonic petals and romantic aromas. “My first love was not my first heartbreak,” the Aaliyah and Rihanna disciple whispers in “To Last.” Ouch. Clearly, she’s learned how to pack punches from her pop-R&B heroes. “Water” is a particularly fetching track. “It’s kind of a naughty song,” she confessed, before adding, “It’s a summer song.” What else is there to say: dive in, but don’t expect to cool off.

Those are phenomenal numbers. So much so that we had to jump in on the rapidly-ascending ground floor. That fans are going to go crazy for these performances might be the easiest prediction we'll make this year. Sitting together on the DSCVR stage, this constellation of six young stars giggled in anticipation about 2025 plans. A couple even got goosebumps, a sensation that many viewers will certainly share.

Spend time roaming ‘Planet Her’ and you’ll know that Doja Cat’s artistic vision never sleeps. The singer’s desire to develop rich musical and visual environments for her fans is job one, and her third album, coming after ‘Amala’ and ‘Hot Pink,’ is her most fully-realized statement yet - surely one of the reasons the singer's career exploded in the last year. Doja has told interviewers that she wanted to take chances, try new approaches, and create “otherworldly” sounds. Job done. The same goes for these new Official Live Performances. After meeting with the singer and her creative team, our production crew got to work in a canyon outside of LA. There, assuring that “otherworldly” request was appropriately fleshed out, we built a 48’ stage in the center of a rocky crag. Doja, banking on a combo of skills, artistry, and perseverance, did the rest. Check it out this three-song performance of "Need To Know," "Love To Dream," and "Ain't Shit."

Ayra Starr fulfills past promises and pushes Afrobeats forward on her spectacular sophomore album, ‘The Year I Turned 21.’ In many ways - including its age-centric title and lyrical candor - it's an extension of ‘19 & Dangerous,’ the Beninese Nigerian’s star-making 2021 debut. That project played a big part in Vevo naming Starr to our DSCVR Artists To Watch program; her “Rush” performance, in fact, is one of our most popular in recent memory. Nowadays, she’s a wildly successful young twenty-something. You could forgive the newly mint zillenial for reveling in designer clothes as she hangs out with the rich and the hot. Well-earned, of course. But ‘The Year I Turned 21’ is preoccupied with money in a different way. “I’m trying to figure out a way to stay the same,” she rues on “21.” She recently told Apple Music that the track, in which she ticks off the years of her life (“19 I got a big bag”), freed her from writer’s block. “Commas” is poised to be another level up. It’s deeply spiritual, restless, and ambitious. Her faith in God and allergy to “isokuso” will invariably lead to more commas. We believe that the views-counter for this performance will end up with a few commas, too.

Welcome to the world of Doja Cat. Born and raised in L.A., the 24-year-old self-taught singer-rapper is a vet of sorts. The arts were central to her upbringing, and she started sharing her music on Soundcloud back in 2013. A year later she dropped her much-buzzed-about ‘Purrr!’ EP. Ever since, she’s nurtured an ever-growing array of feverish fans who revere her for combining a radiant charisma with unique flow and tongue-in-cheek lyrics (see: the irresistible“MOOO!”). Seems like Doja has designed her version of alt-R&B to take off in any direction she chooses. Tours with Lizzo and Theophilius London led right into 2018’s impressive ‘Amala,’ her debut proper, followed by last year’s ‘Hot Pink.’ That album’s “Say So” is currently clocking big numbers. Arresting visuals help. Her videos for both her radio juggernaut and "Rules" are wildly fun. When the Vevo production team united with the feline phenom to figure out performance ideas, the creative juices were flowing. The goal? Put the “cat” in Doja Cat - a decision that resulted in what’s probably our most ambitious studio build to date for a LIFT performance. For her “Streets” performance, we built Doja a massive bowl of 2%, where she was clearly in her element. And if that isn’t peak, then the human-sized scratching house is. Dressed in full cat-ear regalia, she pawed her way through the two-story structure, purring the lyrics to her R&B throwback jam “Say So.”

“I knew from the moment [we met] we were about to start something big.” That’s Jorja Douglas recalling her first connection with fellow FLO mates Stella Quaresma and Renée Downer. Seems like Jorja’s intuition was correct. Released last spring, FLO’s debut track “Cardboard Box'' immediately went crazy viral, and threw the 20-year-olds into the middle of the conversation about the current wave of nostalgic-leaning R&B. Comparisons to fellow UK girl groups Spice Girls and Sugababes arrived quickly. Debut EP ‘The Edge’ reinforces the trio’s commitment to the bedazzled fun of throwback pop-R&B. Check how the languid chimes that set the vibe for Ashanti and Usher at the turn of the millennium mark the punchy verses and harmonized choruses of FLO’s “Feature Me.” Indeed, one could easily be convinced that Missy Elliot and Darkchild lent the drum machine they used on Destiny Child’s ‘The Writing’s on the Wall’ to the trio’s producers for “Summertime.” As effortless as they make it seem, Stella, Renée and Jorja spent two years honing their craft before dropping any tracks. That timespan included finding the right teammates, such as “Cardboard Box” producer MNEK, who also has credits with Dua Lipa and Beyoncé. “We had so much fun arranging and recording our Vevo session earlier this year,” they said about their summer visit to our DSCVR studio. Things have changed in the months between: we’ve made a gorgeous upgrade to our space, and FLO has more songs out and ready to perform, like the harmony-tastic "Not My Job." This girl group’s vision is strong, and just like Jorja, we have a really good feeling about it.
